VIKEN, Sweden, May 28, 2018 (Newswire.com) - TikoMed, a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on developing therapeutics for treating acute and degenerative neurological and ophthalmic diseases, is delighted to announce that the company has been granted permission for a clinical trial (Phase 2a) in ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) at Sahlgrenska University Hospital by the Swedish Medical Product Agency and Ethical Review Board.

The study will be performed at and in collaboration with Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden. Assoc. Professor Lennart Persson, a world renowned key opinion leader, will be principal investigator. 15 patients will be treated with ILB during a 4-week period.
Tikomed is also preparing for an ALS study with Birmingham University Hospital, UK. 15 patients will be treated with ILB during a 10-week period.

About ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)
ALS is a neurodegenerative sclerotic nerve disease that causes the nerve cells that control the body’s muscles to gradually deteriorate. It is the most serious disease in the group of motor neuron diseases. The disease causes increased weight loss followed by muscle thinning (muscle atrophy) and finally general paralysis. The direct cause of death is often lost in breathing and that the heart is no longer able to beat.
There is today no cure, but the available drug treatment consists of medicine slowing the progression. Although there are exceptions, half of the patients die within 3 years and another 25 percent die within 5 years after the first symptoms.
